Tonight I had my first sober First Thursday. I was downtown with my little sister from BBBS, so i wasn’t drinking anything but Dr. Pepper. Because I was sober, for the first time I really noticed how MUCH wine and beer is everywhere downtown. The bike/booze mobile was riding all over with a pack of drunk as skunks rowdy men, and there were microbreweries handing out free beer samples at several stores, as well as wine being handed out everywhere. Now, you know me — I LOVE ME SOME FREE WINE AND BEER SAMPLES!!! But it was just a bizarre situation, explaining this to a 12 year old who had never been to First Thurs. before. I’m trying to be a mentor - a good influence - and I find myself often thinking about age appropriateness when I’m with her. Then I realized, I never really worried about this stuff at all with my own kids, who have grown up going to First Thursdays and Saturday Market, etc, and grown up seeing their mom drink every single sample wine/beer i could get my hands on. What effect is that going to have on them as adult drinkers? My kids have been around drinking and parties basically since they were born. I am not saying this is good or bad, I’m just saying it is what it is — but tonight’s events definitely made me think about it more in depth than I ever have before. Thoughts????

loveology visits Mexican bakeries…

Today I’m going to enlighten you about a little hole in the wall bakery in Nampa, freaking Idaho that is love-a-licious. It’s downtown in what used to be a gas station on 2nd street. It is now chock full of everything from pepitos, to hand made tamales and tacos, to every sugary Mexican baked good you can imagine. Real Coke in a bottle from Mexico with REAL sugar instead of that nasty American Coke with the ever evil High Fructose Corn Syrup. Oh, how i LOOOOOOOVE real Coke in a bottle with REAL sugar!!! OMG, it’s like heaven in a bottle. I usually say beer and wine is heaven in a bottle, but Real Coke is heavenly too with the added bonus of making me giddy and hyper. Anyway, back to my little yummylicious Mexican Bakery - called Nueva Vida Bakery at 1424 2nd St S, Nampa, ID 83651. Check them out. And have a little piggy shaped pumpkin cookie (puerquito) for me. Yummmmmm! Pan dulces are only 50 cents each, so INDULGE!!!image

Billy Dee Williams may have had to withdraw from Dancing with the Stars because of back pain, be he’ll always be a 10 in our book.

In a dried-out riverbed a woman and her young son kneel beside a hand-dug hole in the ground, using plastic canisters to scoop water burbling up through the sand. Several naked children with swollen bellies wait their turn. The improvised well seems to be little more than a puddle, yet an entire community of 600 people depend on it. A hand pumped well is just several hundred meters away, under the shade of palm trees, but the bolts on it are bust. The villagers tried to repair it with palm fronds, but that did not work.

Nakujan Ariong, a mother of six, says she knows that the dirty water is not safe to drink, but her family has no alternative. “This is the only water available, and that’s why we use it,” she tells The Lancet. As she is speaking, a man brings over two camels to drink from the watering hole, which the children have just vacated.

It is still early in the year, but already nearly 1.3 million Kenyans are going hungry. In Turkana, in the northwest, the percentage of children younger than 5 years at risk of malnutrition is more than 21 percent. One woman was arrested for feeding her children the family dog.

In Wajir, in the northeast of the country, people are again having to rely on water being trucked to their communities, while water sources dry up and “drought birds” have made an appearance, despoiling local water supplies with faeces. Hungry residents are crossing into Somalia seeking pasture and water.

LUCY: a movie that I suspect Luc Besson can make more of nowadays according to his vision due to the advancement of special effects:

Set in a futuristic world that is run by the mob, street gangs, drug addicts and corrupted cops, Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), a woman living in Taipei, Taiwan, 2069 AD, works as a drug mule for the mob. The drug she inadvertently takes goes into her system, changing her into a metahuman. She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can’t feel pain and other discomforts.

A huge fan of THE FIFTH ELEMENT and THE PROFESSIONAL, I can’t wait to see Scarlett Johansson in action!

LUCY is due out in theatres August 8th, 2014.
